Volnovakha

On October 27, 2023, a mass murder of nine people took place in the town of Volnovakha, Donetsk region, which was occupied by the Russian military during the invasion of Ukraine in March 2022. The victims were three generations of a family, including two children, who had gathered the day before for a family celebration. 

On the night of October 28, the owners, 25-year-old Oleksandr Kapkants and his wife, 27-year-old Kateryna Khatynska, were shot dead in a private home on Donetsk Street in Volnovakha. Their four-year-old son Mykyta and nine-year-old daughter Nastya were killed with them. Also killed were 31-year-old brother Andriy Kapkanets, his wife Natalia, and 20-year-old Dmytro, Kateryna Khatynska's brother, 53-year-old father of the brothers Eduard Kapkanets, and his 51-year-old wife Tatiana, whose birthday all the relatives had gathered to celebrate the day before.

All 9 members of the family were killed in their sleep. The assailants used special assault rifles. "Val" or "Vintorez" assault rifles designed for silent shooting. The bodies were found 8-10 hours after the murders. According to Astra, high-ranking military officials initially tried to cover up the tragedy.

Based on these events, artist Oleh Shuplyak created art as a memorial to this tragedy.
