Bombing of the Mariupol Theater - the destruction of the Donetsk Drama Theater in Mariupol as a result of a bombing attack by the Russian Armed Forces on March 16, 2022.
The building of the theater in Mariupol was used as a bomb shelter during the blockade of the city. According to various sources, from 500 to 1200 civilians hid there in the days before March 16.
On March 18, the Mariupol city council reported that the bomb shelter under the theater had survived and that about 130 people had been rescued. On March 25, the city council said that "according to eyewitnesses," about 300 people were killed in the bombing of the theater. The Associated Press conducted its own investigation and concluded that as many as 600 people may have been killed in the airstrike. The international human rights organization Amnesty International believes that the number of casualties was lower because of an earlier evacuation of the city.
On April 13, OSCE experts declared that the Russian military was responsible for the bombing of the Mariupol theater, calling it a war crime. On June 30, the international human rights organization Amnesty International came to the same conclusion.
